Brown arrived in Texas in November, 1839, on board the steamship Columbia, served as an Indian fighter in a Texas Ranger company under John C. Hays, was wounded in the Battle of Salado during the Woll Invasion of 1842, served as a colonel in the Texas militia in the Mexican War, and was at various times a printer and newspaper publisher throughout his career. Brown's massive personal correspondence and research files, which occupy 33 shelf-feet in the University of Texas archives, are among the most useful collections for Texas historical research?"
