Tintype Portrait of Hidden Father Holding Child. Mid-19th Century. Tintype photograph (sixth plate format) depicting a young child seated while supported by a partially concealed adult figure—likely the father—obscured behind the sitter in the typical “hidden mother” studio convention adapted here with a male figure. The adult’s presence is visible in outline and drapery, creating a subtly uncanny composition characteristic of mid-19th century portrait practices. The child is dressed in period attire and posed formally against a plain studio backdrop. The plate has clipped corners, housed in a simple mat. Image approximately 3 1/4 x 2 3/4".
