Hedin's bilateral Chinese-Swedish expedition was one of the largest scientific undertakings of the 20th century. Hedin called it a "peripatetic university," with a core team of 37 international scientists often splitting into smaller groups to map a vast expanse of the continent. Volumes I-III comprise Hedin's personal narrative of the expedition; vol. IV is by other members, including Folke Bergman, Gerhard Bexell, Birger Bohlin, and Gosta Montell.
