Illustrated. Four volumes. Volume I: maps to endpapers, 19 plates and maps, xx 400, [16, Index] pp.; volume II: maps to endpapers, 22 plates and maps, xxvii, 478 pp; volume III: maps to endpapers, 22 plates and maps, xxii, 534 pp; volume IV: maps to endpapers, 19 plates and maps, xviii, 493 pp. Bound in publisher's full green cloth, boards double-ruled in blind, front boards and spines stamped in gilt (first two volumes with gilt-stamped imperial seal of the Survey of India; last two volumes are post-independence with altered gilt-stamped seals of the Survey of India). Cloth of volume I a bit darker green than the other three. FIRST EDITIONS OF THE FIRST FOUR VOLUMES - THE FIFTH VOLUME IS VIRTUALLY UNOBTAINABLE AS IT WAS QUICKLY WITHDRAWN BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.

These volumes are the definitive work on surveying India by contemporary and earlier cartographers. Some of the regions depicted include: the Himalayas, Tibet, sources of the Ganges and Gogra rivers, Bogle, Nepal, Assam, and more. These four volumes were produced over a long period of time, spanning the time before and after India's independence.

Condition

Some wear, soiling, scuffing to bindings, corners a bit bumped, volumes I and II with inkstamp of the R. U. S. I. Library on the ffeps (no maps on these ffeps.), volumes III and IV with small bookshop plates (Luzac & Company of London) beneath the dates on the title-pages. Still, a fine set.
