DAVENPORT, William H. (1841 - 1877). William Davenport ALS to his Sister Louisa. Dated March 24 1876 and written entirely in Davenport's hand on two sheets of paper from Calcutta, India. The fascinating missive describes conditions of their tour: "We have now been in India six week[s] and have done a good business. We have cleared about ten thousand francs independent of rigging ourselves out with clothes. We have expended about one thousand francs in clothes. ... We shall probably remain here in India five or six months ... if everything goes right ... [we will] leave the country with five or six thousand dollars at least for our share." The letter concludes, "With much love your devoted brother, W.H.H. Davenport."
The verso of the second sheet contains a second ALS from William Davenport to a familiy member, "Mike," regarding family matters and practical issues, and is SIGNED by Davenport at the conclusion.
A historically interesting document with two RARE Davenport autographs, written entirely in his own hand and the first such example we have seen offered for sale at public auction.
Condition
Hinged together with old cellotape, which has stained the sheets. Splitting at old folds. Fragile but intact.
