DAVENPORT, William H. (1841 - 1877). William Davenport Obituary Broadside. Sydney, July 8th, 1877. Letterpress handbill or broadside memorializing the untimely death of William H.H. Davenport, one half-of the world-famous Davenport Brothers. With the heading, "In Memoriam" followed by a four-stanza verse incorporating the first letter of each of his names at the outset of each line. With the printed signature of the author, E. Lewis Scott at the conclusion of the poem. A RARE surviving example of this Australian relic celebrating the life of this notable magician and entertainer, owned and treasured by his brother, Ira, for decades after William's passing. 

Sold together with a carte de visite-size photograph of William Davenport's son, W.H. Davenport II; and a Christmas greeting sent to W.H. Davenport II by Frank Fay, son of William Fay (the performing partner and manager of the Davenport Brothers) postmarked from Australia in 1910.

Browned, chipped, and with stains and losses at right, partially mounted to an album page.
