African Missionary Photograph Archive / Brown Brothers Press Group (Congo Mission). 1910s–1920s. Group of vernacular photographs documenting missionary activity in Central Africa, likely the Congo, several later circulated as press images with Brown Brothers credit stamps on versos. The photographs depict a range of scenes including mission compounds, congregations gathered at church structures, European missionaries and African converts, family group portraits, village life, and work scenes; one image shows individuals beside a ship marked “Portugal,” while others include detailed manuscript captions describing daily routines, religious instruction, and local communities. The handwritten captions and later agency stamps suggest these originated as personal or missionary documentation and were subsequently repurposed for editorial or press distribution, offering a layered record of early 20th-century missionary presence and its visual framing for Western audiences. Sizes vary, the largest approximately 6 1/2 x 3 1/2".

Condition

Condition varies with edge wear, creasing, and handling; several with inscriptions, captions, and Brown Brothers credit stamps on verso.
