Post Card with color photo of the desert near Palm Springs on the recto. One page post card in Albert Einstein's hand, one small inscription on verso by Einstein's wife, Ilsa. Approximately 3 1/2 x 5 1/2". Written in German. Stamped with ink cancels. Addressed: "Edouard Einstein Huttenstr. [?] 62 Zurich, Switzerland" / "Lieber Tetel [Einstein's affectionate nickname for Edouard]". Signed "Dein Vater" ["Your Father"]. AN EXCELLENT POST CARD WRITTEN TO HIS SON DURING EINSTEIN'S TRIP TO CALIFORNIA TO BEGIN HIS FIRST VISITING PROFESSORSHIP AT THE CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY IN PASADENA. 

Translation: "Thank you for the note. My brain is just being dry distilled by the California desert. It's very pleasant. Mama is getting cacti, but I don't have the written-down name with me here. Your Father". On the recto is Ilsa Einstein's note [translated]: "Heartfelt greetings from the California desert. Ilsa". 

While still living in Germany, Einstein came to California in 1931 for his professorship at Caltech. In this quickly-written post card, Einstein talks about cacti and the desert heat, but leaves out details about his adventures that week, including: meeting Charlie Chaplin at the L.A. premier of City Lights, and visiting the Mt. Wilson Observatory with Edwin Hubble.
