HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961). Three Stories & Ten Poems. [Paris: Contact Publishing Co., 1923]. 12mo. [viii], 1-[56], [1, blank] pp. Publisher's printed blue wrappers. FIRST EDITION OF HEMINGWAY'S FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK, PUBLISHED BY ROBERT MCALMON'S CONTACT PUBLISHING CO., ONE OF ONLY 300 COPIES. In Our Time was contracted previously, but McAlmon got this title to press first.

This book showcases Hemingway's minimalist style, exploring themes of disillusionment, war, and life as an American expatriate in France. One of the short stories, Up in Michigan, was banned for many years in the United States, due to its theme of sexual assault.

Condition

Wrappers worn, soiled, joints creased, spine toned, some marginal minor chipping and a few short tears to wrappers, later bookseller's ticket on rear inner wrapper, text toned, wrinkled, some occasional soiling in text, the final two leaves chipped at fore-edge (no loss of text). Very good. Housed in modern quarter red morocco slipcase and red cloth chemise, and with later glassine.
