A finely made sterling silver presentation tray with acorn and oak leaf motif at its borders, engraved at its center with the text ?1896 [SAM Logo] 1919 / Mr. and Mrs. Harry Houdini / From Members / In the Society of / American Magicians." The dates at the top of the inscription flank a small enameled S.A.M. logo encircled two golden snakes. Tray approximately 17 x 12 x 2". Hallmarked and stamped ?STERLING" underneath. Only very faint scratching and wear mostly under the base; near fine.Harry and Beatrice Houdini celebrated their silver wedding anniversary in Los Angeles on June 21, 1919, at an event staged by the local Society of American Magicians. The couple spent considerable time in California that year as Houdini was beginning his forays in Hollywood as an actor.The party was reported on in the July 1919 issue of M-U-M: ?In commemoration of the Silver Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Houdini the Society of American Magicians presented them with a wonderful silver cake tray bearing the emblem of the society.?When called upon for a speech, Houdini was reminded of the oration of Pogie O'Brien, the old-time circus manager, who, upon receiving a magnificent gold watch as a gift, said: ?T'anks for de watch.' Houdini said, ?Thanks for the dish, it takes the cake.'"
