[NEWSPAPERS]. [ANTI-NAZIS]. New York Life. Vol. 1 No. 1. [Brooklyn: J. G. Burten, June, 1933]. Large folio. Publisher's color wrappers, [8 pp]. Unbound, as issued. Approximately 18 3/4 x 13".
Horizontal central crease, some marginal toning, some rubbing, occasional marginal short tears, chips, lightly rolled at bottom. Fine. THE RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THIS NEWSPAPER, ONE OF THE EARLIEST AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS CRITICAL OF HITLER AND THE NAZIS. This sensational and politically charged first issue of New York Life features the bold headline “The Truth About Hitler”, with a stark anti-Nazi cover illustration showing jackbooted Nazi soldiers advancing violently under the swastika flag. Released just months after Hitler’s rise to power, the magazine contains exclusive stories and photographs documenting early Nazi atrocities, and includes a call by Samuel Untermyer urging a boycott of Nazi Germany. This publication is a powerful and graphic contemporary condemnation of Nazism at a time when many American outlets were still silent or ambivalent. Some of the earliest accounts of persecution of Jews by the Nazis to appear in print for the general American public.
